Situated atop a rocky ridge between the Alzeau and Dure Rivers and nestled at the base of the Montagne Noire, Montolieu—originally known as Montis Olivis, or Mount of Olives—is a picturesque village that captivates all who visit. Surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, forests, rolling fields, pristine rivers, and lakes, this idyllic village in the Aude region of France boasts a rich historical background that matches its natural beauty. Notable figures such as Charlemagne and Colbert have played a part in shaping the village's history, with Charlemagne establishing the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD and Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, founding a Royal Manufactory that exported high-quality woollen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village, and its early inhabitants thrived by working in the vineyards, olive groves, and water mills that powered successful textile and paper plants. While Montolieu experienced a decline in population and industry over the years, a book lover stepped in to spark a modern-day renaissance, transforming the village into a book lover's paradise. Today, Montolieu attracts visitors from all walks of life, offering a blend of literary charm and outdoor activities amidst its breathtaking natural and historical surroundings.
